Photobiological Safety Testing

The rapid adoption of high-powered LEDs for professional and domestic lighting applications is associated with a range of safety issues. An overdose of radiation can cause eye and skin diseases. For the European market, these are addressed by the EN 62471 standard for photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems, which assesses optical radiation hazards from all types of lamps or other broadband light sources. It covers LEDs, as well as incandescent, fluorescent, gas-discharge, arc and other lamps. In this standard, the measurement will cover the complete wavelength range from 200nm to 3000nm, including UV, visible light and IR, and the relevant hazards will be evaluated. The product will be classified according to the following:

  • Exempt Group
  • Risk Group 1 (Low-Risk)
  • Risk Group 2 (Moderate-Risk)
  • Risk Group 3 (High-Risk)
